A National Historic Site

Roof and structural restoration

Waterloo Foundation for the Arts manages Waterloo Village, a restored 19th century Morris Canal port town. Located in the Allamuchy Mountain State Park along the banks of the Musconetong River in Sussex County, it is recognized as a National Historic Site and was opened to the public in 1964.

Built in 1831, Smith’s General Store was managed and owned by the Smith family, and stocked supplies for canal boatmen and sundries for local residents, in addition to serving as the local post office.
