This Gothic Revival styled church was built in 1745. The octagonal wood steeple with a copper spire was built later, in 1773 and is on the National Register of Historic Sites. There is a pre-Revolutionary cemetery around the church. The original church burned down but the Tower survived.
In 1776, it was the site of the third public reading of the Declaration of Independence from the foot of the tower. By English Law any document publicly read three times then became law. The first Episcopal Bishop in New Jersey was rector at Christ Church.
Historic Christ Church is one of the few remaining landmarks in what was once New Brunswick's Hiram Market Historic District.
Below: a postcard from the 1880's and several photographs of the tower from 1938.
